May 24th, 2009 10:27 PM We upped the ante in the Halibut Derby today with a 106 pounder caught by Mark Strbiak of Seattle fishing on the Ranger (Captain Don Davenport / Ocean Charters). Mark won $500 and now leads the pack for the $1,000 grand prize sponsored by "Eat on the Wild Side". (That's the marketing arm of Fishing Vessel Owners Association and Deep Sea Fishermen's Union. Those are the commercial fishing folks that catch the Alaska halibut you can buy at the market or in most northwest restaurants.) Mark's fish was not the biggest today, though. Justin Werry caught a 159 pounder (1-5-9) but unfortunately had not purchased a derby ticket!!! Justin was fishing on the Sea Angel (Captain Brian Mirante / Westport Charters). That's the biggest halibut ever caught on a charterboat in Westport in my memory. We had a 140 pounder about 16-17 years ago and there is a rumor of a 150. Looks like Halibut will last at least a few more weeks (Sundays only though). Our best estimate is that May 31 is guaranteed. June 7 very probable and June 14 very possible. There's plenty of space available on charter boats next Sunday - call your favorite charter service!
May 17th, 2009 8:01 AM HALIBUT FISHING REMAINS GOOD - FISH ARE GETTING BIGGER BY THE TRIP. 75 POUNDER WON DERBY TODAY. $500 FOR PHIL GREGER OF CHEHALIS. NEXT SUNDAY, MAY 24, IS THE NEXT OPEN HALIBUT DAY. CALL YOUR FAVORITE CHARTER SERVICE!
May 14th, 2009 5:27 PM Halibut is improving by the trip - fish are steadily getting bigger. 67 pounder now leads the derby. WDFW reports that 17,633 lbs were caught through Tuesday, May 12. That leaves 23,109 lbs in quota. Halibut openings are as follows: Sunday May 17 - guaranteed, Sunday May 24 - guaranteed, Sunday May 31 - tentative. May 31 will be decided on May 26 and posted at that time. Lingcod fishing continues to be good when weather is good.
May 9th, 2009 12:13 AM GOOD LINGCOD FISHING TODAY - NEW SEASON DERBY LEADER - 33-2 - HALIBUT OPEN AGAIN TOMORROW AND TUESDAY. HALIBUT WILL MOST LIKELY LAST THROUGH MAY (AT LEAST) - (OPEN DATES IN MAY ARE THUS MAY 10, 12, 17, 24, 31) - 5,000 POUNDS (OUT OF A 40,000 POUND QUOTA) CAUGHT ON OPENING DAY LAST WEEK - STAY TUNED!
May 4th, 2009 1:17 PM Halibut season opened yesterday in Westport. Most folks got their 'but. A 46 pounder took the daily derby - $500 prize. Tuesday's fishing has been cancelled due to a horrible weather forecast. Our next Halibut days are Sunday, May 10, Tuesday, May 12, and probably Sunday, May 17. The May 17 date will be decided on Thursday, May 14 and by evening it will be posted here on our fishing report page. Stay tuned and pray for better weather! Contact your charter service for more specific information.

March 28th, 2009 7:56 PM Well, we've been fishing for a couple of weeks now for Rockfish and Lingcod - weather permitting, that is! Still waiting for the rumored global warming to hit Westport. Rockfish limits on days out have been the rule. Lingcod fishing okay when the weather's really good. 22 pounder leading the derby so far. Boats are fishing 7 days per week. Halibut starts on May 3 and all bets are on a June 28 salmon opener. Major run of Coho this year. Chinook about the same as 2008. Stay tuned!
